Chapter 2

How probability shrinks

Odds imply a probability. Multiplying legs multiplies those implied probabilities too, so they fall quickly as legs are added. When every price carries a margin, as the invented prices in problem 10 do, that margin compounds in the same way.

Every leg implies 80% (odds 1.25). The red dashed line is an even chance.

Problem 7: Reading a price as a probability

Warm-up

What probability do decimal odds of 2.00 and 1.25 imply?

Odds
2.00 and 1.25
Show working for problem 7
  1. Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds.
  2. 1 ÷ 2.00 = 0.50 = 50%.
  3. 1 ÷ 1.25 = 0.80 = 80%.

Answer 50% and 80%.

Problem 8: Four short-priced legs

Steady

Four legs are each priced at 1.25, an implied 80% each. What do the combined odds imply for all four together?

Legs
4 × 1.25
Implied each
80%
Show working for problem 8
  1. Combined odds: 1.25 × 1.25 × 1.25 × 1.25 = 2.4414, shown as 2.44.
  2. Combined implied probability: 0.80 × 0.80 × 0.80 × 0.80 = 0.4096 = 40.96%.
  3. Check: 1 ÷ 2.4414 gives the same figure.

Answer About 41%: four legs that each look likely combine to less than an even chance.

Problem 9: Three different legs

Steady

Three legs imply 60%, 70%, 75%. What is the combined implied probability?

Implied
60%, 70%, 75%
Show working for problem 9
  1. 0.60 × 0.70 × 0.75 = 0.3150.

Answer 31.5%, a little under one in three.

Problem 10: The margin compounds

Stretch

Each leg is a two-way market priced 1.91 on both sides (invented). Without any margin, each side would be 2.00. Compare a 4-leg accumulator at 1.91 with the margin-free version.

Each side
1.91
Legs
4
Stake
₦1,000
Show working for problem 10
  1. One market: 1 ÷ 1.91 = 0.52356 per side; 0.52356 × 2 = 1.04712, so the margin is 4.7%.
  2. Accumulator: 1.914 = 13.3086; return ₦13,308.63.
  3. Margin-free: 2.004 = 16.00; return ₦16,000.
  4. Share lost to margin: 1 − 13.3086 ÷ 16.00 = 16.8%.

Answer The 4.7% margin per market becomes about 16.8% over 4 legs.

Problem 11: When does it drop below 10%?

Steady

Every leg implies 70%. After how many legs does the combined implied probability first fall below 10%?

Implied each
70%
Threshold
10%
Show working for problem 11
  1. 0.706 = 0.1176 = 11.8%.
  2. 0.707 = 0.0824 = 8.2%.

Answer At 7 legs.

Problem 12: A price is not a forecast

Warm-up

A leg is priced at 1.50, an implied 66.7%. Does that mean it will win two times out of three?

Odds
1.50
Show working for problem 12
  1. 1 ÷ 1.50 = 0.667: that is what the price implies.
  2. A price is a number someone has set, not a count of how often the leg wins.
  3. If the price carries a margin, as the invented prices in problem 10 do, the implied figure is also higher than a margin-free price would give.

Answer No. Implied probability is a way of reading the price, not a statement of how often the leg will win.
